Shakhrisabz, Tamerlane’s birthplace

Tamerlane was born here in 1336 and wanted to make it his capital. Of his “white palace”, Ak-Saray, the pillars of a gateway that was once among the tallest in the Islamic world still stand. The historic centre has been on the UNESCO list since 2000.
